Where Are You?

Reimagining the Gay Community and the Critical Roles of Youth, Adults, Elders and Ancestors

Ask yourself: "Where do I stand on the continuum that ranges from Elder, Adult, and Youth and how am I contributing to the health of the Gay community?”  At this Faetopia Festival workshop, co-facilitated with Roberto Blain, learn how to build a stronger Gay Community from Don Kilhefner, Gay liberation pioneer, community organizer, Radical Faerie and Jungian psychologist. He is also a founder of Los Angeles’ Gay and Lesbian Center, Van Ness Recovery House, Gay Men’s Medicine Circle, and numerous other seminal organizations in the gay community including (with Harry Hay) the Radical Faeries, an international gay spirituality and consciousness movement.

"Renewing, rebirthing, and revisioning of our community is not only necessary but possible. But it cannot be done without awake and alive gay ancestors, elders, adults and youth working cooperatively together. In the 1970’s a movement made up largely of gay adults birthed a social revolution of major proportions which is still echoing around the world and in our hearts. Similar possibilities for moving gay community and consciousness forward are now within our grasp but it cannot be done without the conscious engagement of gay elders and adults. The only way we will get the kind of gay community we want to live in is to create it.  The key to that possibility is the awakening and emergence of gay adults.

WORKSHOP APPROACH

Alternating between presentation, discussion, imagination, poetry and ritual, this highly-interactive workshop is directed toward initiating a soul-directed, rather than an ego-led, process that empowers both the individual and the community. It recognizes that we stand at the threshold of a historically important generational shift in the gay community. It suggests that the central organizing principle of that tectonic shift will be intergenerational dialogue and cooperation involving youth, adults, elders, and ancestors. It blesses a gay community in renewal.

“I contend that the gifts of gay youth, the future of our community, are going largely unblessed, unsupported, and unmonitored today by community adults. Our youth are not developing inner authority. Indeed, often it is difficult to distinguish the consciousness and behavior of a 20something from that of a 40something.  If adults are not present helping them develop that inner authority, it may never happen, and their lives may truly be divided into younger gay and older gay with nothing in between. Our community will be impoverished as a result.”

-- Dr. Kilhefner

"What are the organizing principles of the roles we play as ancestors, elders, adults and youth? How can we use our special gifts to make the greatest difference for each other, our community, and the larger community in which we live today? I believe it's of the utmost importance for us to explore and re-imagine our roles and talents so that we can embody and present a more unified, dynamic front as members of the GLBT community. It's a profound and challenging conversation, but one that contains an enormous amount of energy, potency and possibility."

-- Roberto Blain
